I've used this drill to increase and enhance ball movement on offense. It is extremely effective with the younger age groups because they are able to learn the concept of passing in an offensive set. You place your players in each of their respective positions: PG, SG, C, PF, SF. You put 1 minute on the clock. The ball begins at 1/2 court with the PG. At the sound of your whistle, the ball is in play and the clock is started. The entire 5-man unit has 1:00 to score 10 points. Here's the catch. All 5 players MUST score 1 basket (5 players x 2 pts.each = 10pts.) and no 1 player can score more than 1 basket. After a basket is scored, the ball is kicked out to the PG at the top of the key and the drill is continued. This teaches the players how to move the ball on offense and decreases selfishness with the ball as well as gets the whole team involved. If the unit does not score 10 points in 1 minute, the entire unit runs a full-court sprint.
This particular drill introduces the concept of ball movement on offense. It can be used for teams on levels from recreational youth to even high school. However, I used it primarily for my 9-11 coed summer team. The young players were able to learn the concept of offensive ball movement. I'm not sure if this drill did the trick or not, but after extensive use of it in every practice session, I saw my team's offensive average go from 16.2 PPG to 22.6 PPG in a 3-game span. (Doesn't sound like much, but for a group of 9-11 year old boys and girls in a YMCA Rec League, that's a lot). In our final game, we scored 37 points, a record for our league that season. Also, all 9 of my players, including my 3 girls, were able to score at least 1 basket for that 6-game season. Talk about offensive ball movement!
Accentuate quick, aggressive passing and ball movement. Remind unit of remaining time on the clock to evoke quicker ball movement from the players. Encourage players to stay with it when they miss their shots.
If the unit is able to reach 10 points with ample time remaining, decrease the time limit from 1:00 to 00:55 to 00:50 to as low as 00:40. Any lower than that is probably impossible. However, the higher the age group, the less time required.
