I started using this drill after 4 months of practice. Before I had done the simple shell drill (box format and diamond format - 2-2 and 1-2-1) and my players had progressed a lot on defense, so much that I hadn't lost a game and I felt we could make it better. I decided to introduce double-teaming.
Make it a diamond format (1 guard - 2 forwards - 1 center) 4 on 4 four half court game; have your player's double team as soon as the ball goes to the forward or the guard dribbles to one wing.
In the first case it is the guard double-teaming and in the second it is the forward coming for the double-team.
Double-team everywhere on the half court except in the point guard position.
Have your players rotating, talking, helping and pressing the ball (not for steals but for pass deflections - because the first gives you a lot of fouls, at least here...)
Groups of 4 (at least 2 groups)
You can also double team on the point guard, have your player defending the guard close one side and double team either from the back or from the front (have signs ready ...)
You can adjust to zone defenses 3-2; 1-3-1; 2-3; etc.
Players like it because it gives them the impression that you defend less time; which is in fact true but it is more aggressive, you take more chances, you make the game faster and more exciting.
This has proven useful so far, better than full court traps but it will never beat the good old fashioned man - man defense that is in my opinion the best defense to play and the best way to teach how to play...
