Open Practice: High Post Screening Offense

with Bill Self,
Kansas Head Coach; 2016 AP Coach of the Year2008 NCAA National Champions, 2012 NCAA Runner Up, 12x Big 12 Regular Season Champions (2005-2016), 2x Naismith College Coach of the Year (2016 & 2012), John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award (2013); 500 Career Wins

Legendary head coach Bill Self provides an extensive look into the Kansas offensive system. Coach Self uses an early practice session to guide you step-by-step through a complex half-court offense. Whiteboard diagrams that provide a detailed look at each action within the offense enhance his explanations.

Kansas plays a free-flowing, organized offense that starts with a rebound at the defensive end and attacks in multiple waves. The primary transition leads into a secondary transition that leads into multiple scenarios with the same starting set-up. Coach Self explains the strategy of each segment on a whiteboard, step-by-step, before moving to the practice floor, where the Jayhawks work extensively on offensive strategies.

Coach Self demonstrates the basic rules each player needs to follow to keep the offense flowing. He covers his team's two-game entry, maximizing high- and low-post options within their offense. He transitions smoothly into their ball screen fist offense, utilizing driving lanes and paint touches creating a balanced offense.

Coach Self completes this basic Kansas offensive package by demonstrating his transition offense and all of the scoring options available in the half court. He uses whiteboard diagrams to progressively build each layer of the team's secondary break. He also offers two baseline out-of-bounds plays that can be used against a man or zone defense for an easy lay-up.

This is a must-have video for any coach who needs a fresh and effective offensive system. Because it features eight players new to the Kansas offense, you get a great look at how to teach and implement these strategies into your program. You'll learn the challenges of implementing the Kansas offense as well as techniques for overcoming them.

With Bill Self's Kansas offense, your team will be in constant attack mode, leaving your opponents scrambling the entire possession.

Open Practice: Zone Offense

with Bill Self,
Kansas Head Coach; 2016 AP Coach of the Year2008 NCAA National Champions, 2012 NCAA Runner Up, 12x Big 12 Regular Season Champions (2005-2016), 2x Naismith College Coach of the Year (2016 & 2012), John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award (2013); 500 Career Wins

Strengthen your playbook with proven strategies from legendary University of Kansas Head Coach Bill Self. Coach Self shares two zone offenses that create scoring opportunities along with several counters that will make your offense unstoppable. With the primary goal of forcing four defenders to play just three offensive players, his zone offenses create confusion, scrambles and open shots that devastate opposing teams.

In his "stationary" strategy, Coach Self uses a quick moving zone offense to create scoring opportunities in the post, utilizing the short corner to stretch the defense. Players find gaps within the defense allowing them to score around the rim or take a quick striking three-point shot. Also in this segment, Coach Self introduces the "hot potato" concept to demonstrate how to move the ball quickly against a 2-3 zone.

The more intricate, equally effective "slash" strategy is Coach Self's answer to the 3-2 and the 1-3-1 zone defense. In the "slash," Coach Self uses three cutters to fill four open spots along the perimeter. Primary and secondary cutters are used through the lane to create an element of surprise. Coach Self uses 5v5 demonstrations to teach his young team how to expose the weaknesses of a 2-3 zone.

Coach Self completes this package by demonstrating the Kansas press offense, which any team can use against a zone press. Your team will dissect your opponent's pressure defense by taking advantage of the middle of the court, allowing you to score layup after lay-up in the open court.

This is a great DVD to add to your collection if you are looking for a zone offense that attacks your opponent's weaknesses and creates scoring opportunities around the rim.

Open Practice: Defensive Drills & Concepts

with Bill Self,
Kansas Head Coach; 2016 AP Coach of the Year2008 NCAA National Champions, 2012 NCAA Runner Up, 12x Big 12 Regular Season Champions (2005-2016), 2x Naismith College Coach of the Year (2016 & 2012), John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award (2013); 500 Career Wins

Develop a dominating team defense with the valuable drills and skills taught in this live, on-court practice from one of America's premier programs, the Kansas Jayhawks. In this second-week practice session, Bill Self gets his Kansas team focused on defensive concepts. Coach Self takes viewers through the Kansas man-to-man defense as he builds from the half-court to the full court with eight newcomers to his program. You'll learn the fundamental defensive principles that form the basis of the Kansas program.

Coach Self uses 2v2, 3v3, 4v4, and 5v5 to instill a hard working, man-to-man philosophy. Using a shell drill, he teaches players how close out to the ball from the help side position and one pass away. He discusses the importance of communication as players move from pressuring the basketball to the help side defense and back again.

Next, Coach Self focuses on specific aspects of the half-court game, such as defending dribble hand-offs. Big-to-big switches is a simple technique he uses to address this offensive threat. He also teaches players how to defend this action against a big and little run hand-off. Guarding the "pinch post" action is another aspect covered in this section of the presentation.

Coach Self continues with a detailed segment on how Kansas defends the post-on-post screen and down screen. He also shares several techniques used by his teams to defend on ball screens, including flat hedge, trap and hard hedge. A critical element of this part of practice is challenging players to get the moves right.

After covering the Kansas half-court defensive philosophy, Coach Self puts everything together in a 5v5 full court session. He pulls together his full-court defense as he demonstrates his transition defense and philosophy. Many of the concepts taught earlier in the presentation are reviewed, re-taught and stressed as the game goes live.

Coach Self's passion for defense and attention to detail are evident throughout the presentation. He breaks things down clearly and then works his players until they get it right.

Learn the simple secret to playing dominating man-to-man defense with this incredible on-court presentation. With Bill Self's Jayhawk Defense, your teams will be prepared to pick apart your opponent's play and force tough outside shots.
