with Josh Gamblin,
Mid-America Christian University Head Coach;
2016 NAIA D1 Championship,
2016 Rawlings-NAIA D1 Coach of the Year,
Graduate Assistant at University of Oklahoma under Lon Kruger

Josh Gamblin has had remarkable success with Mid-America Christian University in his short tenure with the program. He has created a championship program by simplifying and emphasizing his non-negotiables. On defense, this has translated into a team that values communication, pressuring the ball, and minimizing both paint touches and uncontested jumpers.

In this video, you will see how Coach Gamblin accomplishes these principles in his ball screen defense with two defensive strategies based on where the ball is located on the court. He breaks down the player responsibilities and key teaching points to each strategy that will help you implement these successfully with your team.

Ice

Learn how to use "Ice" for any ball screens that occur in the outer thirds of the court. This tactic has become a primary strategy for teams in the NBA and college ranks. You'll get a thorough breakdown of all the essential teaching points for the players directly involved in the ball screen.

  • Train your on-ball defender the proper technique to attack the ball and dictate where the dribbler goes.
  • Teach the screen defender how to build a wall that eliminates any dribble penetration to the middle.
  • See the roles of help defenders and how to "tag" the roller to keep the ball out of their hands while still being able to recover on any passes to shooting threats on the perimeter.

Coach Gamblin discusses how to counter common strategies such as slips and flipping the screen that you can expect to see from your opponents. Additionally, learn how you can disrupt teams that try to run Double Drags with two screeners by simply forcing the dribbler to reject the screens with Ice.

All of this information is demonstrated with walk-throughs and live 5-on-5 action so you can see how this strategy will work in game situations.

Weak

Middle ball screens are particularly dangerous for a talented player that has the whole floor at their disposal. Learn how this defensive strategy will take away options by forcing him/her to their weak hand. This will force the dribbler to make plays outside of his/her strengths while consistently dictating the direction of the ball screen. Gamblin includes what the weak side defenders should look for and the roles for the strong side corner defender.

Adjustments

Coach Gamblin covers the roles and responsibilities of all the players involved in the ball screen through a common Horns alignment. You will see how screen defenders attack the ball to force retreat dribbles. Gamblin demonstrates how you can neutralize great pick and pop shooters with help support from off-ball defenders. You will also learn how you can increase the challenge for your player to properly defend the screen by creating movement in your drills prior to setting the ball screen.

Use the defensive strategies in this video to dictate how your opponent runs their offense and force them into their least effective scoring options!
