"I think it is important that coaches from around the country have a chance to visit Flagstaff and Northern Arizona," said NAU Head Coach Jack Murphy. "It is a great time to visit and talk a little hoops. I have been fortunate in my career to be around some great coaches and have some great friends in the business. They are coming together to support what we are trying to build here at NAU. They are giving back to me on a personal level, but I think they are giving back to all the coaches who will attend as well. We all have a passion for the game of basketball and it is conveyed in many different ways. When we all congregate together is when real learning and sharing gets done."

I recently started a coaching blog dedicated to providing content directly from some of the best college and high school coaches. I just started this in the last week so you'll see just the first couple of blog posts, but one is from VCU on their havoc defense and the second post is some baseline out of bounds plays from Notre Dame. Again, this content has come directly from the coaches at these programs, not something I scrapped up off the internet. If you'd like to check it out at www.coachpintar.com and give me some feedback I would appreciate hearing from you guys.

I decided to share my full review I wrote on the Jump Manual because some people think most of the programs that promise 10 inches to your vertical jump or a 50 inch vertical are a bunch of garbage. Well, I got my hands on the Jump Manual and feel like it is definitely a high quality program that could work for any athlete at any level. Of course it takes time and dedication to get serious results. But if you're dedicated to adding 10 inches or more to your vertical jump then the Jump Manual will guide you in the right direction.

Push/Pull is really a combination of what is now being called Read and React infused with both DDM and Drive and Kick. Push/ Pull can be run as the only phase of the offense or as phase two after a cutter or series of cutters. The concepts can be adapted easily to three, four and five out offensive sets. I have found it most effective when combined with ball reversal, screening and player movement because getting the defense moving to stop screening and cutting then driving is much more difficult. Push/Pull was named for the terminology used to describe player movement especially on the perimeter. When any player dribbles at you, they push you to a position that makes it difficult, spacing wise, for your defender to recover before you shoot or drive. When the player dribbles away from you, you are pulled along with other players to a position that shortens passes back to you and promotes ball reversal, skip and diagonal passes. Post players on the ball side step up to the elbow on baseline wing drive or post up at the block on a middle drive unless they are a face up player then they step to short corner. Two post sets require coordination to allow perimeters to get room to drive. I have used Push/Pull only with minor set adjustments against zone defenses. We simply drive behind cutters making defenders readjust after defending a cutter making it very difficult to help.

CAREER CHANGE...TO COACHING (no replies)

I've recently been challenged in my current career. I've noticed the things I enjoy and the things I don't. There's been a change in myself that wants to branch out, but not sure if it's the right direction. I have thought of coaching before, but never put a plan into action. I think it's just been too easy to stay what I'm doing because it feels comfortable.

I analyze the move from careers as something that isn't attainable and end up talking myself out of it. Not to a sense of giving up, but maybe losing interest. Does that mean I really don't want to do it? Is it too hard to get into? Or am I not talking to the right people to keep that spirit alive? But...this time I did something.

I have registered to complete my Coaching Certification at my local community college. I have taken my thought, made a plan, and acted on it. I have a Bachelor's Degree, but in a completely different field. I have tons of work experience. I'm a Police Officer and worked in the Restaurant Industry for 13 years. I also volunteer as a mentor to students at the University in my town.

I understand the need to start as an Assistant Coach for a middle school or high school. But, do I really need a degree in Education/Teaching? Can I still pursue this career change with the experience, education, and volunteering I have already done? I'm in my early/mid 30's and believe this is the time to make that change and go for it...I played basketball in High School and continue to play pick-up games, but never in college as I worked full-time. I'm passionate about basketball, Men's or Women's, doesn't matter...it's all about unity.

I don't have a coaching philosophy, or an in-depth knowledge of plays to run, but I do know how to relate to kids and inspire character. I have honest and genuine sincerity with living life to it's fullest every day. Is that all that is needed? Can I still pursue this career change and make it without a fancy degree or collegiate level playing experience?

I would love any and all feedback from anyone who can contribute to someone who wants to make a career change...
