"I think it is important that coaches from around the country have a chance to visit Flagstaff and Northern Arizona," said NAU Head Coach Jack Murphy. "It is a great time to visit and talk a little hoops. I have been fortunate in my career to be around some great coaches and have some great friends in the business. They are coming together to support what we are trying to build here at NAU. They are giving back to me on a personal level, but I think they are giving back to all the coaches who will attend as well. We all have a passion for the game of basketball and it is conveyed in many different ways. When we all congregate together is when real learning and sharing gets done."

I recently started a coaching blog dedicated to providing content directly from some of the best college and high school coaches. I just started this in the last week so you'll see just the first couple of blog posts, but one is from VCU on their havoc defense and the second post is some baseline out of bounds plays from Notre Dame. Again, this content has come directly from the coaches at these programs, not something I scrapped up off the internet. If you'd like to check it out at www.coachpintar.com and give me some feedback I would appreciate hearing from you guys.
Thanks,

CAREER CHANGE...TO COACHING (no replies)

I've recently been challenged in my current career. I've noticed the things I enjoy and the things I don't. There's been a change in myself that wants to branch out, but not sure if it's the right direction. I have thought of coaching before, but never put a plan into action. I think it's just been too easy to stay what I'm doing because it feels comfortable.

I analyze the move from careers as something that isn't attainable and end up talking myself out of it. Not to a sense of giving up, but maybe losing interest. Does that mean I really don't want to do it? Is it too hard to get into? Or am I not talking to the right people to keep that spirit alive? But...this time I did something.

I have registered to complete my Coaching Certification at my local community college. I have taken my thought, made a plan, and acted on it. I have a Bachelor's Degree, but in a completely different field. I have tons of work experience. I'm a Police Officer and worked in the Restaurant Industry for 13 years. I also volunteer as a mentor to students at the University in my town.

I understand the need to start as an Assistant Coach for a middle school or high school. But, do I really need a degree in Education/Teaching? Can I still pursue this career change with the experience, education, and volunteering I have already done? I'm in my early/mid 30's and believe this is the time to make that change and go for it...I played basketball in High School and continue to play pick-up games, but never in college as I worked full-time. I'm passionate about basketball, Men's or Women's, doesn't matter...it's all about unity.

I don't have a coaching philosophy, or an in-depth knowledge of plays to run, but I do know how to relate to kids and inspire character. I have honest and genuine sincerity with living life to it's fullest every day. Is that all that is needed? Can I still pursue this career change and make it without a fancy degree or collegiate level playing experience?

I would love any and all feedback from anyone who can contribute to someone who wants to make a career change...

Little history: I have been the JV Boys Head/Varsity Assistant Coach for the last 8 seasons. Five seasons at a school in a different state and then I was brought over here to my HS alma mater for the last three seasons specifically to take over the Varsity Head of 30 years (multiple state championships, over 10 Final Fours, state HOF, 300+ wins). He has told me that he is likely done this year (but last year he said the same thing).

Question 1) When hiring your staff, did you have complete control from 5th grade on up? Did you specifically tell them what they must run? Both coaches I have coached under were pretty hand's off.

Question 2) Do you feel it is more important to have the "better" basketball coach as a Varsity Assistant or JV Head coach. We currently have 3 coaches for 9-12 (JV Head, Varsity Head, Varsity Assistant).

Question 3) I'm confident and ready for this next step in my journey. I have coached almost a decade of JV ball under two very different but both successful coaches (including the current one who coached me when I played) and am convinced I'm ready to take over the reigns. However, I'm wondering if any of you have had any experience taking over for a beloved and celebrated coach as I will with a long record of accomplishments and such an amazing track record? I'm worried that I will forever be compared to "him", no matter what happens, good or bad. I know this WILL happen and I am responsible because I did come back to my alma mater but this is town where I live and I work in the HS so it was too good to pass up. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

Thanks and keep winning,

I am the head JV girls coach at a local high school. My team has had to face adversity all year as far as personnel goes. Our starting point guard quit on us, we made the adjustments and moved on. When we got ourselves together and started to win my two best players got pulled up to varsity. A varsity post player who never got any time was sent down. I took her from the post and put her at the wing. We made the adjustments and moved forward and she has blossomed into a great player and leader. Another player was sent down (as a punishment in my opinion) and also has made a huge impact on how we play. We were playing the best basketball of the season and then last night the varsity head coach tells me they're pulling the last player sent down was being back up.

My issue is that we have had to make many adjustments and have had to go through so much change and now this will be another change that could cause the team to give up. I don't know what to do, how can I keep them motivated? I feel like I'm being sabotaged by the varsity coaches and I'm frustraited and upset because we only have three games left and the varsity has no chance at a playoff berth. Why blow up the JV team like this? It makes no sense to me. Can anyone try to put this in perspective because I can't.

I coach a 1st grade boys team and I had an issue with getting my point guards to pass. I have two kids who are really, really good with the ball in their hands and can drive to the basket. But when we play the two better teams in our league they make life hard for those two kids. Thier still able to get the ball to the play, but they either throw up a bad shot, or pass to the wing player - whos farther away from the basket and covered most of the time.

Ive tried to tell the two kids every time they penetrate, it brings up the defenders from the post, and leaves my low kids wide open. My PG is the tallest kid on the court, but he still holds the ball in his chest rather than over his head and it leads to turnovers and tie balls. We played one of the two good teams this weekend, and he did a better job in the 1st half of making quicker passes down low and we got the shots. But as the game wore on he went back to throwing up bad shots, or turning his back and passing to defended kids.

Being 1st graders, all weve worked on is basics these two years and just have an offensive set. Our post season starts next week and we only have three practices left. So I was wondering if theres anything I can do in the next week to help him get the passes down there and really focus on that. Weve done some 3 on 3 scrimmage drills that focus on him making the pass after the penetrates is about it. After getting hammered all last year in kindergarten; I would like to get the boys a trophy this season! So if theres any kind of drills I can run, or anything to help him, that would be great!

Coaching college basketball is my main dream in life. I'm currently 16 year old sophomore playing varsity at my 3AAA high school. We are 20-0 and I've always been a around winning teams and knows what it's like to win. I also am a student of the game, always studying and pickin up on plays and things like that. I have a notebook full of play and notes that I keep and I really enjoy it. I don't feel like I have the talent level to play college ball, but I feel I have a very high Basketball IQ and I'm great with teaching and motivating. I'm thinking that become a student manager at the university I attend would be a good start. Then keep building my résumé.
I need suggestions, feedback, anything! I want his really bad and I'm always working at it, even at 16! What are my chances, and is there any coaches out there with advice. Thank you so much for your time!

So I am new to this forum and have a long question that I am hoping someone can answer. So I use to coach at a park district for six years and have not been able to for some years now. My wife is in school for the next couple of years and when she is done I will be able to quit my job and focus strictly on coaching. I would like to spend the next couple years studying and getting everything I need out of the way so here come my questions. First what would I need to be able to land a high school job because that is really where I want to be? And second what would be the chances that not just me but any coach is good enough in high school to be recognized and recruited by a college? If you could email me at Ferriera85@gmail.com I would appreciate it
