Push/Pull is really a combination of what is now being called Read and React infused with both DDM and Drive and Kick. Push/ Pull can be run as the only phase of the offense or as phase two after a cutter or series of cutters. The concepts can be adapted easily to three, four and five out offensive sets. I have found it most effective when combined with ball reversal, screening and player movement because getting the defense moving to stop screening and cutting then driving is much more difficult. Push/Pull was named for the terminology used to describe player movement especially on the perimeter. When any player dribbles at you, they push you to a position that makes it difficult, spacing wise, for your defender to recover before you shoot or drive. When the player dribbles away from you, you are pulled along with other players to a position that shortens passes back to you and promotes ball reversal, skip and diagonal passes. Post players on the ball side step up to the elbow on baseline wing drive or post up at the block on a middle drive unless they are a face up player then they step to short corner. Two post sets require coordination to allow perimeters to get room to drive. I have used Push/Pull only with minor set adjustments against zone defenses. We simply drive behind cutters making defenders readjust after defending a cutter making it very difficult to help.

Advanced Ball Handling Drills (1 reply)

Advanced ball handling drills mainly have one purpose, and that is to set one apart from his competition and allow him to dominate defenders.

Advanced drills are designed to be difficult but once mastered they will develop your ball handling into something serious.

There are quick tips and tricks to improve your ball handling instantly, but the most effective way to develop elite ball handling ability is to master the drills.

A great drill to focus on is the Two-Ball Sprint.

You start at the baseline and speed dribble with two basketballs to the opposite baseline. Then repeat the process three times. You want to focus on going as fast you can while still having control over both basketballs. A quick tip would be to slightly palm the ball when dribbling. This will give you extra control over the basketball.

Another effective drill is the Magic Dribble.

In this drill you start off by standing with two basketballs in your hand. Use your left hand to hold one of the basketballs behind your back. Use your right hand to perform a cross-over dribble in front of your body. You will then receive the basketball with your left hand while your right hand swiftly reaches behind your back to catch the other ball. The concept is to do a cross-over dribble while moving the basketball from one hand to the other behind your back at the same time. You will repeat this process for 45 seconds. Do this as fast as possible while keeping your head up.

Now this drill is somewhat not a drill, but it just depends on your point of view. This is called One on One Make it Take it.

This is a one on one game up to 16 by ones and twos and the person that scores gets the ball again. You will need someone to play against. In this one on one game you want to focus on trying to use moves based on your defender. You want to practice handling the ball and making the right decisions under pressure. Push yourself to try moves you wouldn't normally use just to see what you need to work on. Make moves based on your defenders stance and try get past your defender for a lay-up rather than shooting contested jump shots.

Now that you have these advanced drills to master, here are a few tips.

When playing one on one, try not to over dribble. Make your moves quick and effective, over dribbling is just a waste of time and energy.

When handling the ball keep your knees bent with your weight on the balls of your feet.

And when handling the basketball, keep your dribble wide in order to prevent easy steals.

Once you master these drills and tips, you will notice a significant increase in your ball handling ability. You may want to master some more drills to increase ball handling ability even further. I've found a complete program that has many drills to master for all levels starting from beginner to advanced.

Ball Handling Drills For Beginners (no replies)

Ball handling drills are very effective when trying to improve your ball handling. The problem is there are hundreds of different drills and it's hard to find the best ones to focus on. There are a few ball handling drills that I've used and have gotten great results from. They've been around for years and are still very effective to this day.

The first drill is called the Hundred Dribble. This drill is designed to help you get a great feel for the basketball and eventually turn ball handling into second nature.

To do this drill you simply would stand in one spot and dribble the basketball one hundred times with your non-dominant hand.

Then you would dribble one hundred times with your dominant hand.

Then you would end the drill by dribbling the ball one hundred times again with your non-dominant hand.

When doing this drill make sure to dribble with your fingers tips while snapping your wrist. Do not dribble the basketball with your palms.

The next drill is the Dribbling Jog. In this drill you would start at one baseline on the basketball court and with your dominant hand, dribble the basketball while jogging to the other end of the court and all the way back.

Then you would switch to your non-dominant hand and repeat the same process. Do three sets using each hand, and make sure to dribble with you finger tips while keeping your head up.

The last drill is called the Zig-Zag. This drill can be used with cones but if you don't have any you can still use this drill without them. To begin this drill you would start dribbling from the baseline to the other baseline in a zigzag fashion.

Every time you make a turn you would switch hands. You would do this drill three times. Keep a good pace and remember to keep your head up.

After you have mastered these drills you will notice a remarkable difference in your ball handling. You will feel like you have more control over the basketball, and you will be much more confident when handling the basketball against defenders.

If you want to be a great ball handler, you can't neglect simple drills like these. If you can't complete these drills flawlessly your ball handling ability will suffer.

Also, these drills should be done correctly if you want to see great results.

You need a complete system that shows you how to do the drills and when to do them.

There is a program I've found that has effective ball handling drills and moves with video explanations as well as, written explanations that show you exactly how to do each move and drill.

If you want to check out my number one recommended ball handling program: Click Here!

Seven ideas on teaching offense (2 replies)

Regardless of the style of play you teach, the tempo you want your team to play at or the age level of your players, in order for your team to have success on offense you need to have an organized approach to teaching offense. Here are some general tips on what needs to be included in a sound approach to teaching offense:

1) Teach players how to play versus run an offense.
2) Emphasize spacing and floor balance.
3) Move both the ball and players – players must move both with a purpose.
4) Offensive rebounding for all shot attempts.
5) Combine cutting with screening to increase the effectiveness of player movement.
6) Teach players the team comes first and individuals second.
7) Be patient. It takes time for players to mesh offensively.

In addition to the above seven concepts, find ways to teach individual play within the team concept. Offenses are really just ways to set up individual play during a game (penetration to the basket for a lay-up, a post move leading to a score, a pass for an open three-point attempt, etc.)

Trying to decide what offense to integrate with a first year mix of 3rd/4th graders. All are good/decent basketball players. I'd like something I can run against zone or man. I ran a ton of flex in the past but think that might be too much for them + not sure if it's a great zone offense.

I am coaching middle school girls. This is my first experience coaching girls. I have bought into the fact that they need to learn fundamentals and as a result want to use the Open Post as my offense. Because modified seasons are much shorter in NYS, I planned on keeping it simple for the season and just teaching cuts, filling spots, and 1 on 1 fundamentals. As the season progresses, I may implement some screening. Do you guys agree that this would be a productive offense for this group? I'd love to hear others thoughts on this and any opinions anyone would be willing to share or drills would be great.

I need some help with selecting a half court man offense for my basketball team. My team consists of 1 unskilled big man, 1 athletic big man who can only shoot jumpers or get offensive rebounds, 3 spot up shooters, and one decent pg. NONE of my players are skilled with the ball off the dribble. We have tried to run basic motion, or the 4-1 motion offense, but my players aren't able to read cuts, screen well, or understand the basics involved in running a freelance motion offense. Most teams we have played pressure the ball and deny us at the wings. Almost all of our shots out of the half court set come from quick jump shots or three point attempts after the first pass. I am looking for a continuity offense that stresses cutting, screening, without much in the areas of reading the defense, or driving to the basket. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

MM Offense for team with weak guards (no replies)

Coaches,

Any ideas on an easy continuous man to man offense to implement on a team that has short, weaker guards?

We are currently running the flex offense, and trying to teach the girls how to make various reads; however, they are getting frustrated by the heavy ball pressure and denial they are receiving on top. As a result, they cannot see the cutters. We are also not getting the movement in an offense that I would like because they get fixed on the top position.

My gut is to stick with it, forcing fundamentals and teaching them to make the reads. Then again, it's always good to re-consider...maybe a dribble drive offense or something with screens?

Thanks for your help.

Quick hitters are good, but I am a middle school girls coach. My players are 12 / 13 yrs old and just think it may be easier if I could place them in a set offense. Interestingly, all the schools we play against run a zone defense . . .Any help is appreciated . . .
