Soft Hands Drill - Basketball/Football (no replies)

Soft Hands Drill - Basketball - Football
This drill is a single player high repetition drill to teach the proper way to catch a ball and reaction to the ball with game like conditions. I believe it can be used in Football for receivers and defensive backs as well.
I developed this drill because I would work hard and shed my defender and be open for a easy basket only to have the pass bounce off my hands resulting in a turn over or allow the defense to recover and contest my shot. It didn't happen every time so it was extremely frustrating. I began to try to figure out why this was happening.
I began dribbling my basketball off the wall to try to help train my hands and it helped some. But it wasn't till I by chance used a rubber school yard ball that I figured out what was happening. I was using my whole hand to catch the ball. This meant that a hard pass or one that was at the wrong angle would hit my palms and bounce off. The bouncy rubber ball made the problem of catching worse, but, I could hear the ball hit my palms telling me why it bounced off. It would make the same sound hitting my palms of my hands as hitting the wall. Knowing this I began to train myself to catch with the fingers and the inch of the palm at the base of the fingers. This kept the ball from hitting my palms and bouncing off. I then added moving toward the wall and farther away from the wall, changing the speed of the dribble off the wall, moving along the wall dribbling off the wall, dribbling the ball higher and lower on the wall. This helped me to learn to catch ball under more game like conditions not just a perfectly thrown pass and get a lot of repetitions in a short time.
Soft hands Drill:
You will need a solid concrete or cinder block wall that is 20-30 feet or longer (drywall, paneling will be damaged) and a ball. I recommend starting with the rubber school yard balls then a basketball (mini basketball for football).
Stages 2-4 can be added, mixed as wanted.
Stage 1. Start by dribbling and catching two hand chest passes off the wall from 6-8 feet. Establish a rhythm then begin to speed up the dribble to as fast as you can, then slow the pace down. Challenge yourself to see how long and fast you can go.
Stage 2. Add moving closer and farther away from the wall to while dribbling against the wall.
Stage 3. Add moving (walking, running) along the wall while dribbling against the wall.
Stage 4. Add Dribbling the ball higher and lower on the wall. Mix it up so you are catching the ball at all heights and in front and behind you as well as right at you.

Shot Blocking (1 reply)

Shot blocking seems to be so rare these days. Most players go through the motions of shot blocking and are just trying to distract the shooter. You see this when they jump to where the shooters hands are even though the ball is gone.
Great shot blockers are made. It takes extra effort and training to develop shot blocking skills, but, it is worth it especially today with (IMO) basketball favoring the dribble drive. This is going to open up a lot more opportunities to block shots.
A Great shot blocker has to be:
1. A great defender of a dribbling player or a pass to another player. If the player can dribble around the defender and pass or score he can't block any shots. If the player can pass the ball around the defender he can't block any shots,
2. Patient and not jump to soon. This is very hard in today's attacking offenses and defenses. A player that jumps to soon gets fouls and allows easy scores.
Shot blocking mistakes
	Jumping before the shooter commits to the shot.
	Jumping to where the ball is Not where it will be.
	Jumping forward rather than up.
	leaning your arms toward the shooter and not keeping them straight up.
	Trying to block with both arms or the wrong arm.
	Not rotating the shoulders to raise the arm higher to block shots.
Attributes of a great Shot Blocker
	Great defender of the dribble drive and passes - Multi-Tasking using both arms and legs to defend against passes and shots. Example - Ball side arm and leg defends the pass - non ball side arm to block shots.
	Patience - has to wait till the shooter is committed to the shot.
	Great jumping ability - the higher you can jump the better your chances of blocking a shot.
	Quick jumping ability - lets you make sure the shooter is committed to the shot before you jump.
	Quick hands and feet - stops dribblers and passes, makes the shooter have to shoot.
	Timing and Anticipation - knowing when and where to jump to get to the point the ball will be at to block it. Lets the ball come to him/her

Advantages to shooters
•	They know when they are going to shoot so they have several fractions of a second advantage to get their shot off.
Advantages Shot Blockers
•	Jumping to where the ball is going to be eliminates the advantage of the shooters extra time.
•	Knowing you don't have to actually block a shot to make the shooter miss, simply make them adjust or hurrying a shot.
•	Shooters have a certain speed they shoot at if you can hurry that speed they will miss shots.

I think it is a great shooting workout. It is a hybrid of my own stuff and the Steven Nash 20 minute shooting workout. I list times if you want to do it in 20 minutes as well as number of makes.

It's meant to be done individually but can be done with partners as well. If the person doing the workout has a passed I would increase the number of makes/shots. It's meant to be a conditioning workout as well.

12 ideas for selecting the drills for practice (no replies)

Picking the right drills are essential in order to teach fundamentals, build confidence and create the right habits for excellent performance in actual games. Drills are how we as coaches build the foundation for the strategy and tactics we will use to compete. Drills are part of how our athletes learn to compete and challenge themselves. If planning practice in detail is part of the process of building a winning team, picking the right drills for practice is another essential part of the process!

Over the 20+ years in the coaching game I have arrived at a checklist of twelve items to use when selecting drills. Here is the list:

1) Create a master list of drills to use prior to the start of each season and stick to the drills on the list. The exception is if there is a need for a NEW drill to be created to teach something unforeseen during the off-season planning process, I will create the so-called custom drill and add it to the list.

2) The first question to ask when creating the master drill list is "does the drill fit the system?" If the drill does not teach a key fundamental or concept essential to the system it does not make the list. If there are better drills to teach the same things, the drill does not make the list. Be ruthless when creating the master drill list.

3) Is everything covered? In addition to the master drill list, I create a master list of skills, concepts, strategy, tactics and special situations. The drills have to teach all of this AND fit all of the above requirements to make the master drill list. Begin with the end in mind!

HoopCoach.org is modeled after the business networking site Linkedin.com. Linkedin is a business social network where people connect with colleagues with the anticipation of parlaying those contacts into business propositions and jobs. As a basketball coach I am not extremely interested in furthering my day time career henceHoopCoach.org was born. Aside from being a job board with all the open postings from the NCAA, NBA, NAIA, and High School, HoopCoach.org also hopes to connect coaches from around the world and create networks that open basketball coaching opportunities. If you are interested in pursuing a career in coaching basketball register today!
EURO JOHN BBALL
Early on in his life John grew up in Center City Philadelphia. His love of basketball started while watching the older students play pick up ball before school in the mornings. John practiced some of his moves he saw on the playground, while listening to 76ers games in his small backyard, as a 10,11,and 12 year old. His first organized basketball team was as an 11 year old playing for Greenfield school at the famous Christian street YMCA. At age 13 John moved to Cherry Hill , N.J and played 8th grade and high school ball. His go to moves were the Earl Monroe spin dribble and the Tony Parker tear drop floater. At 5 foot 8 inches tall, John had the athleticism to get off the floor and grab the rim. He played against Division 1 college talent in leagues and would put up 30 point games regularly.
I've been asked in many different platforms about defending late game situations where the opposing team is ahead and attempts to control the clock using a delay game offense i.e. 4 corners, high stacks, or triangle.

Quite honestly, I had never thought about putting my thoughts and techniques on paper in regards to defending delay offenses, however if you live in a state (Oregonians) where there still is no shot clock, the delay offense can be a real threat. So, I've released a new playbook download for $5 (as always) titled, Defending Delay Game Offenses Plus Full Court Game Winners perfect for a Coach's Christmas.

It's my hope this information will help you create a sense of unease and confusion for your opponent who is attempting to change the complexity of the game with a stall offense.

Hello all, I need help with coaching. My son's basketball B-team is without a coach and I seem to be the only one to volunteer (I know I'm asking for headaches). I know how to play the game but don't have any coaching experience in basketball. I have a good bit of coaching experience with baseball and football at the youth and high school level. My question, is there any books or videos available to help me with practices, teaching fundamentals, offense, and defense for basketball at this level (age 10 to 12)? Any help would greatly appreciate.
