Who should you include in your list of references when applying for a head coaching job when you are already in the program as an assistant coach? I would say, obviously, the former head coach. But, you can't include the athletic director, because they are on the interview committee, as is the building principal. How about a former player? A parent of a former player? Is a parent of a current player off-limits? How many references are too many?
