1-1-3 OR 2-3 zone defense?
July 09, 2008 11:23AM
I am looking at playing some zone next season and I have traditionally played a 2-3 zone. We would play it like Syracuse and where we would bump and have our top two guards in the zone try and cover the both wings and the point positions.

I am now thinking about a 1-1-3 zone and did not know if anyone had any thoughts to share on this zone and it's slides. I have read that Terri Mitchell has a good tape out on the 1-1-3 zone defense. So let me know what the differences are between a 1-1-3 and 2-3 and which you prefer and why. Thanks!

I have run both. I like the 1-1-3 because it gives slightly better high post coverage but does leave you succeptable to the wing jump shot. I've had good quick guards who could get out and cover the wings but I've also had teams who we couldn't run it with because of good opponent guard play/shooting. Depending on your rotations and your personnel I think it gives the opponent a different look and can disrupt them.

When we play AGAINST a 1-1-3 I have a zone attack that begins in a 1-4 high alignment that usually beats it fairly easy. Teams don't stay it in for long so I caution using it too much.

The key to running the 1-1-3 defense is to attack the ball handler at 3/4 court and force the ball to the sideline, where your wing will attack. Some people like to pass off the dribbler to the back tandem guard, but in doing this you expose the middle of the floor by leaving the high post open. The three rules I use are push hard to the sideline and baseline, Always cover high post, and if you are not trapping then you have box responsiblity. I have an extensive handout that I have devised based on the 3/4 ct 1-1-3. and different situations. If you would like a copy let me know?

I have had alot of success using the 1-1-3
gotten a lot of mileage out of it. the one thing you have to do is figure out how you are going to defend a team when they put two guys on the same sideline. Lute Olsen at Arizona has a good tape available on championship productions that shows how they defend and rotate in the 1-1-3. I highly recommend it!

I prefer the 1-1-3 for the ball pressure reasons stated above. I have three SWARM versions depending on you philosophy and what you already play for quicker transition. My 1-1-3 stuff is called "Mosquito" after being bitten hard in MD.

On the other hand, I have a unique 2-3 that morphes into the set
of the offense after an initial stunt on the ball. You would never use all of them but I have created 17 options to stunt. So many I almost ran out of ideas for names. I named this "Kicker" for the GBB team that I created for because they were the Mules.

My 1-3 is called "Spider" and the overall package is called the "SWARM" Most of the stunts follow a common theme of when it was invented or who it is for on both offense or defense.

Is it too late to get something sent to me? We're trying out this defense this year, and we're off to a good start with it, but I'm seeing some holes and wanted to see how we could improve.
