Basketball Defensive Drills - Taking the Charge

Description:

1-3 lines at half court. One player in middle of key. Coach calls out either 1,2, or 3, corresponding to a numbered line. As soon as a # has been called, first player in that line dribbles to the basket, taking it fast, hard, and strong. Player in key goes and touches key boundary line opposite of ball. Then, that player rushes to the other side of the key and assumes the 'taking a charge' position. (Important: To prevent injury, make sure the players have feet planted, good balance, and most of all, are protecting their groin area.) Finally, dribbler dribbles full speed at the defender. As soon as they make contact, defender falls to the ground on back side.
