In this on-court instructional video, Porter Moser passes on how he was able to take his group all the way to college basketball's biggest stage in 2018.

Moser contends the main key to Loyola's success was their culture. This video explores many of the cultural foundations that Moser installed to help guide his team. You'll also get some great drills that embody his program, as well as some principles that are effective against any zone defense.

Promoting a Good Culture

Coach Moser spent a great deal of time coaching with the legendary Rick Majerus, and throughout his presentation, Moser revisits many of the concepts and strategies he learned while working with Coach Majerus.

Moser shares an abundance of culture-building ideas, including:

  • As a coach or a player you must always be invested in learning.
  • Relationships are a huge part of developing a positive culture.
  • Use simple phrases that resonate with your players.
  • You achieve what you emphasize.
  • Players need to be able to articulate how to do something - if they can't articulate it, they probably can't do it.
  • A coach's job is to get everyone to believe in whatever they are selling.
  • Embrace the little things.

Drills and Strategies

Next, Coach Moser gets into drills that he uses with his team. "Close to the Body" helps defenders find the man they are guarding after they encounter a screen or some other offensive action. "Throw and Go" is not only a shooting drill, but one of the core offensive concepts covered in the zone offense section of this video. This drill directly relates to how Moser wants his athletes to attack a zone, while also getting much-needed shots up in practice. Any time you can make a drill directly relate to the game, its value is increased!

Finally, you'll learn Moser's principles on how to effectively attack a zone. This section is unique and is supremely rewarding because Coach Moser doesn't just give you a play, or an offense that will help you verses a specific zone, he shares with you a series of big-picture concepts that will help you and your players against any zone or any adjustment that can be made in a zone.

  • Some of the thoughts covered are as follows:

    • Gap Dribble - Get two players to guard one.
    • Pass/Fake - Six inch pass fakes get the defense to react.
    • Short Corner and Middle - Players must know this is where the ball needs to go to break up the zone.
    • Throw and Go - A shooting drill and offensive concept.
    • Ball Screens - Get two players to guard one.
    • Shot, Partner, Opposite
    • Counter Flow - Gets the defense going in the wrong direction.

Moser ends with some small "food for thought" concepts could make the difference in a closely fought game. Some are on-the-court actions, while others are program thoughts that may help push your kids. One of the most important points shared is the idea of helping your players understand "truth." Moser gives you three priceless phrases that cover this area and will deeply resonate for all coaches.

This video from Coach Moser tackles one of the most important concepts in coaching: how a coach can create a positive, winning culture. Many coaches have great offensive strategies or dominant defensive concepts, but they can never reach the heights they desire because they haven't created that strong cultural foundation in their program. If you are ready to take your team to the next level, this video will guide you through many of the important concepts you'll need along the way!
