2x State Champions (only coach in California history to take two schools to a state title); 2000 National High School Coach of the Year; 2012 National Catholic Coach of the Year; California State Coach of the Year (2010, 2011); 2nd All-Time in the State of California in Winning Percentage (.868)

Building a basketball program is difficult under the time restriction rules that most programs face. In spite of these rules, Frank Allocco built De La Salle High School and Northgate High School into California state champions.

In this clinic, he discusses his teaching philosophy which involves using breakdown drill progressions to install his offensive and defensive systems.

Coach Alloco shows a variety of drill progressions you can use to build your offensive and defensive attack. Progressions are used to teach and build from the ground up, and also allow your players to build basketball IQ.

Each progression starts out with 1-on-1 drills, then 2-on-2, 3-on-3, and finally 5-on-5 drills to teach his systems in a live, detail oriented and time-efficient method. The drills will not only make your team better, but will also incorporate accountability and communication.

Coaching Today's Athletes

During a brief introductory session, Coach Allocco discusses his views on the challenges that coaches face in today's era. Acknowledging that players today are not the same as they were even 10 years ago, Coach Allocco states several philosophical statements and quotes that he has used as a backbone throughout his career and that help bridge prior generations to today. Topics include:

  • Today's players mindset and attitude
  • Seasonal opportunities and when to "rebirth" a program
  • Drill types and the decline in fundamental emphasis

Offensive Transition

Coach Allocco demonstrates three drills that he used to teach his fast-paced, offensive transition. Using these drills in practice you will:

  • Teach your team to get the ball out of the net and up the floor quickly
  • Learn to attack the defense in transition in different even and advantage situations
  • Teach your players how to relieve pressure while still playing fast
  • Rebounding

Continuing with his part-to-whole teaching method, Coach Allocco demonstrates the series of breakdown drills he used to teach rebounding. All of these drills end with a live game-like rebound, and incorporate other facets of the game such as closeout techniques and defensive positioning. His 3-on-3 triangle rebounding drill teaches players to box out and rebound from different angles on a shot after the ball changes sides of the floor quickly.

    Defensive Fundamentals

The easiest shots in basketball are the ones that are closest to the hoop. In demonstrating the drills that he used to teach his defensive fundamentals, Coach Allocco puts a special emphasis on keeping the ball out of the paint and away from the hoop. During this segment, you will learn the game-like drill progressions that will teach your players:

    • Individual defensive techniques such as closeouts, on and off ball defense, and how to double the low post
    • Transition defense - stopping the ball and holding serve when facing a numbers disadvantage
    • How to communicate on defense

His 5-on-5 defensive identity drill ties together his entire defensive philosophy into one competitive, game-like drill.

Coach Allocco demonstrates his philosophy of detail-oriented teaching using over a dozen game-like, competitive drills. You will learn how to build your own drill progressions to teach your team to compete at a championship level.

"Frank Allocco's part-whole teaching method using live, competitive drills is a very good way to teach
