Mike Procopio's 3-on-3 Player Development

with Mike Procopio,
Director/President of Hoop Consultants;
Director of Player Development for the Dallas Mavericks (NBA);
Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago (IL);
has worked with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler, as well as 75 other NBA players;
Strategic Game Management Coach to Kobe Bryant for two seasons (2009-12 and 2 NBA Championships); former Maine Red Claws (NBDL) Assistant Coach

He is the best player development coach in the NBA. Mark Cuban - Owner, Dallas Mavericks

Coach Mike Procopio provides a way for you to work on various aspects of team development, both offensively and defensively, using 3-on-3 play.

There are numerous benefits to using 3-on-3 play:

  • It provides more touches
  • Forces the defense to focus more and communicate better
  • Teaches players offensive concepts, how to execute them, and how to make reads off each

The other aspect that makes this video valuable is it's perfect for coaches who, for various reasons, have a small number of players at practice.

Coach Procopio goes through a variety of game situations that are used frequently throughout a game. He communicates in a way that is easy to understand and can quickly be put into a practice plan to make your team better.

3-on-3 Training

Coach Procopio opens by explaining the various rules you can apply to enhance the concept being taught to get players outside of their comfort zone. He covers rules for when athletes can screen, can't dribble, have a specific number of dribbles, can or cannot switch, and what players must do after they pass.

The 3-on-3 offensive and defensive concepts covered in this video include:

  • Pin Downs
  • Wide Pin Downs
  • Post Entry Off a Cross Screen
  • Back Screens
  • Pick & Roll

Some of the skills players will learn from these 3-on-3 drills include:

  • Spacing
  • Timing of screens
  • Importance of where on the floor certain screens should be set
  • Passing angles
  • Post entry passes
  • Cutting
  • Talking on defense
  • Switching
  • Fighting through screens
  • Help defense
  • How to recover defensively if you get clipped on a screen
  • Offensive reads coming off a screen

Pistols Set

Coach Procopio demonstrates a very popular NBA set called Pistols and how it can be taught using 3-on-3. The focus of the set is to show how difficult it is to defend a pin down screen action where the player coming off the screen immediately goes into a dribble hand-off.

This is a great video for coaches at any level to learn how to teach offensive and defensive concepts in a 3-on-3 setting.

Mike Procopio's Breakdown Drills to Build Your Motion Offense

with Mike Procopio,
Director/President of Hoop Consultants;
Director of Player Development for the Dallas Mavericks (NBA);
Director of Basketball Operations for ATTACK Athletics in Chicago (IL);
has worked with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Caron Butler, as well as 75 other NBA players;

No matter how strong your offensive system is on a tactical level, it will always be limited by the ability of your players to execute it correctly. Even with talented players, your team must understand how to take advantage of all the scoring opportunities within your offense.

NBA player development coach Mike Procopio has carefully analyzed what habits and skills are needed to build an unstoppable motion offense. In this video, he demonstrates how he teaches the top players in the world to recognize game situations and use the universal concepts that result in good offense. Through a variety of breakdown drills, Procopio shows you how to train your players in some of the most common tactics in today's offensive schemes.

Basic Offense

Teach players to intuitively move on the court by reading the defense and situation to maximize the offense's spacing and scoring opportunities. Coach Procopio demonstrates a simple offensive shell drill that will help your players understand when and where to move using tactics such as basket cuts and screen-aways.

Playing off the Post

Teach your perimeter players how to add value in offensive situations where you are trying to get the ball into the post. Simply standing in the same place can result in poor spacing that allows your opponent to trap the post. Procopio shows several options after feeding the post to space the floor and become a scoring threat. You will also learn how to play inside-out with skip passes and ball reversals to find open shooters.

Using Screens

Coach Procopio gives you simple breakdown drills to help your players understand the offensive reads they need to utilize in screening actions. You will learn how to take advantage of tight and wide pin downs. Procopio explains how to set up a defender, how and when to curl the screen, making the next pass when defenders help on the cutter, the proper footwork to score on flares, and more.

Drive & Kick

Against great defenses, your drive and kick game needs to evolve from 1-on-1 play into a team concept. Coach Procopio teaches how to play out of baseline drives with proper spacing and ball movement so you can get multiple drive and kick attacks. This will help your team collapse the defense to find open shooters and easy baskets at the rim.

Pick & Roll

One last offensive breakdown drill will teach your players how to maximize scoring opportunities in side ball screens. From the pick & roll situation, you will learn how to score through the ball handler, roller, or perimeter players moving in response to their defenders helping on the play. Great defenses are typically going to successfully defend the first pick & roll in a possession. Procopio also shows how your offense can flow into multiple ball screens to build upon the advantages created from the first attack.

Building a perimeter offense is a big piece to any motion offense. Once your players learn how to read defenders and create open opportunities, your team will score on the best defenses in your league!

In order to create a year-round skill development program that your players can do in the off-season (and you can implement into your practices during the season), you need to prioritize what skills are most important and drill them as efficiently as possible.

In this video, Mike Procopio shows you the type of training sessions he runs with the highest-level basketball players in the world. These skill sessions are short and fast-paced so your players can maximize their repetitions in as little time as possible. This video is not going to waste your time with drills or skills that have little carryover to the game. Instead, you'll see the most critical offensive skills needed to excel as a perimeter player at any level of competition.

Ball Handling

While there are countless dribble moves your players could learn, very few are practical on a regular basis in game situations. Coach Procopio has refined this list of moves to the absolute essentials your players should focus on developing. Doing these five dribble movements in a stationary ball handling workout will improve the ability of your players to control the ball on the court by creating a more powerful and tighter handle.

Footwork

Being able to get open or quickly get a shot off depends all on footwork. Coach Procopio meticulously covers footwork that allows for catch and shoot, dribble drive, and jab step opportunities while minimizing the risk of traveling. Being consistent with your footwork prevents mistakes. Having the repeatable footwork for each of these attacks keeps the defense on its heels and allows a player to take advantage of however the defense chooses to defend.

If you want your perimeter player to be an offensive threat, they will need to be able to stretch the floor and create their own shot. Procopio shows you how he expands the scoring ability of his players with simple fundamentals rather than developing an array of fancy moves. You will learn Procopio's three keys to great shooting and how to integrate these into any type of shot your players might take, such as catch and shoot jump shots, pull-up jumpers off ball screens, and shooting on the move.

Coach Procopio also demonstrates how you can create space for your shot with step back jumpers or gain an advantage with ball and foot fakes in the triple threat.

A must-have scoring move for smaller players is the floater. Coach Procopio explains how to execute this move in addition to showing you the ideal locations where this type of shot should be taken in a game. These fundamentals will help your players score efficiently from anywhere on the court in any type of offense.

Weak Hand Training

Improving the effectiveness of your players' weak hands will double your team's scoring ability! This video will give you a short training routine that could easily be done in practice on a regular basis to dramatically improve your players' confidence in using both hands to score around the rim. Your players will learn how to finish with multiple types of reverse layups, jump hooks, scoops, and floaters all using their non-dominant hand.

Building a complete wing player is vital to any successful program. Coach Procopio is a master at developing elite players and continuing to make them better. His proven drills and techniques will help you improve your players i

Every coach looks a little more like an offensive genius when his or her team can shoot the ball well. In this video, you will learn how to improve your players' shooting from one of the top player development coaches in the world!

After having worked with hundreds of NBA players over his career, Mike Procopio has distilled the essential principles that must be present in great shooting technique. You will learn how to emphasize these fundamentals through a variety of situations that players need to master in order to excel in any offensive system.

Shooting Form

The best shooters are able to consistently go up with the same form. It shouldn't matter whether players are spotting up on the perimeter, dribbling into the paint, or cutting off a screen. Coach Procopio breaks down these different situations and shows you how he teaches players to utilize the same mechanics in their shooting form despite the variation that these scoring opportunities create.

Throughout the video, Coach Procopio prioritizes several common teaching points that will help your players release the ball on time and in line with the rim. While there are many details to perfect shooting form, focusing on these key concepts will result in the greatest improvement in the shortest amount of time and eliminate the frustration that results when coaches over-complicate their shooting instruction.

Shooting Drills

You will learn drills to train the following:

  • Perfect shooting form with simple warm-up drills that help your player focus on mechanics while incrementally expanding their shooting range.
  • Simplify shot motion with drills that will teach your player to spot up with consistent footwork on his or her perimeter catch and shoot.
  • Pivot on the inside foot to go up into the shot quickly and on balance from cuts that take the player away from the basket.
  • Become an effective shooter off the dribble with efficient footwork and mechanics on the attack dribble and pull-up jump shot. You will also learn how to add pump fakes and jabs to create separation from a defender.

Two additional drills shown by Coach Procopio introduce a competitive element to shooting sessions that motivate players to improve at a faster pace. These drills will challenge your players to focus on making every shot with perfect form by trying to achieve goals within a limited number of attempts.

Make sure your training sessions translate to in-game results with these must-have shooting fundamentals identified by Coach Procopio!
