Sport Performance Preparation: Expanded Teaching Methods for the Non-Strength Coach

  • Keep lifting safe for the athlete - know when progressions need to be slowed down, know how to spot, get a sense of what a strength program can do for the athlete

with Barry Kagan (C.S.C.S., L.M.T., R.N.) earned a Master's Certification from the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association in 2008, a private practice strength and conditioning coach;
former University of Maryland Strength Coach, coached over 100 NCAA All-Americans, 15 NCAA National Championship Teams, played a role in the development of more than a dozen Olympians, 3 Men's FIFA World Cup players, over 50 professional athletes in numerous sports. If video 1 is the text book for strength training, video 4 is the "teacher's addition" with expanded explanations of teaching techniques and safety alerts on complex exercises.

In the fourth video in Barry Kagan's Sport Performance Preparation Series, Coach Kagan presents an expansive and useful instructor's guide. The goal of this video is to allow a non-exercise professional to assist an athlete with the learning process. Kagan shares his experience of training athletes new to the weight room - training hints that can be a worthwhile addition to any personal trainer or new strength coaches video library. He addresses common mistakes and offers extra teaching methods beyond what is offered in Video I (Building a foundation - Strength Training to Take You to the Next Level) for:

  • Olympic lifting movements
  • Squats
  • RDL's
  • Bench press
  • And more
In addition Coach Kagan reviews spotting techniques - proper spotting for the safety of the athlete while promoting independence on the part of the athlete. Parents with no background in lifting will find comfort in the added knowledge when assisting a child learn techniques. Sport coaches will find this video gives them the tools to assist their team with implementation of strength training techniques. Physical education instructors who may be far removed from performance training can find this a valuable resource for teaching power cleans, squats, RDL's and more. Personal trainers - this is a hands on direct teaching tool to expand your arsenal and learn to teach complex exercises in a systematic way. Strength coaches - this video can serve in assisting you with an intern training program. This video is your pathway to assisting your athletes.

This video was a special request on the part of Coach Kagan at the start of this project, because he wanted to empower athletes to have the opportunity to train in the safest possible way without necessarily needing to lay out the expense of working with a performance coach. There is no replacement for the nuanced experience of a real life strength coach or having access to a sport performance training facility, but this video is aimed at athletes who don't have the resources to seek that help on a regular basis. Athletes can include a parent, a mentor, a physical education instructor, or even their high school or club coach in their process.

This is not a stand alone video; it is bound to embedded footage and bonus materials found in Video I (Building a foundation - Strength Training to Take You to the Next Level) but handing this video to someone who is willing to help the athlete can go a long way in improving the athletes opportunity for safe and effective training, and that was Coach Kagan's main focus in producing this video series!

Barry Kagan's Sport Performance Preparation Series contains all the tools necessary to take athletes to the next level in their athletic pursuits. The five part video series contains nearly 15 hours of footage and over 70 files of bonus materials that can guide an athlete from the start of off-season preparation to the completion of post-season play. The athletes used on the video are some of the top athletes in their respective sports in the country - soccer, track, lacrosse, wrestling, swimming, field hockey, baseball and more.
