instinctual vs. analytical play
January 29, 2017 05:49PM
Any advice on how to get a player to play more instinctual and less analytical? Some kids have played and practiced enough basketball to have earned great instincts, but don't seem to tap into them unless put in a hairy situation where there is no time to analyze. That's when they do their best work, but without pressure or urgency they perform a half beat below their potential and sometimes poorly. Intelligent people seem especially slowed by over-thinking, fear of failure, or perfectionism in sports. It's counterintuitive for them to play instinctual, with less thought. It feels risky or out of control to them, even when that's when they play their best. Any experience with this? Advice?
