"L" ... 1-4 High, pass wing and slide the ball side high down the
lane line and weak high post elbow to elbow, weak wing to the weak block ... wing to point, weak wing to corner, pass point to corner or dribble weak elbow and throw corner ... on the dribble,
X the two posts once the point steps out .... on the diagonal pass the low post flashes block to block, high post elbow to elbow, point across the top ... pass in the open gap ... deadly!!

Keep me posted ...

Coach can you please pass along the info you've shared on the 1-1-3.

I am in the process of converting it into a 3/4 court press and want to take it's halfcourt principles into consideration.

I'd be more than willing to share what I come up w/.

Thanks and take care,

Bulldog Coach can you please pass along the info you've shared on the 1-1-3.

I guess I should've read more posts - i didn't see that someone else had been using it as a 3/4 court press like i propose to this season.

I thought I had an original idea...lol.

I'd be grateful to get your POV on it.

Thanks and take care,

Hi Coach Walters,

I am yet another basketball coach looking for information on your 1-1-3 zone defense. I recently an article on a match up 1-1-3 in Winning Hoops. They had the outside player of the posts come up to cover the ball on the wing and then the center post player go out to cover the ball in the corner while the post that covered at the wing sprinted to cover the low block. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? Which way of covering would you recommend for a girls varsity team with quicker guards and no real dominating post player (average speed post players). I'd be glad for any information you can send. krista.reitnour@gmail.com

Thanks.

I will send you first some basic 1-1-3 which I named "Mosquito" to along with Spider (1-3-1) and Hornet, Mutant, Maroon etc..

For the good of the group, I give myself the option to mix it up on first pass coverage based on the attack we face between a
1) back guard covers the first pass
2) top guard chases the first pass
3) forward covers the first pass then ...

I cover the skip with the opposite position ... in other words, if a guard covered first pass a forward would cover the skip pass. In addition, I SWARM all dribbles out of the 1-1-3 or any other zone. I have three handouts on this defense plus a large packet that contains 65 pages and close to 400 diagrams. I hope to have a DVD after next summer if the economy improves.

Coach Walters,

My interest has been peaked with the 1-1-3 zone and would love to learn more about it. I have been hesitant to buy any DVD's on it simply because I haven't read any great reviews on any of the available films out there. I am a men's junior college assistant, and just learned a basic sketch of this D last season but would love to get some more knowledge on it. I notice people including their email addresses on here for you to send some info to, I was hoping I could do the same.

i have been running the 1-1-3 defense for 4 years now. i was helped a great deal by coach Greg Kampe of Oakland University in Michigan, Coach Melissa Mcferrin of the University of Memphis and Coach Matt Corkery from American University in Washington, D.C.

i have my bottom players get the first pass. my middle defender full fronts or 3/4s the low post. my top players have the elbow and the nail respectively.
we trap all passes or drives to the baseline, short corner and long corner area. on our traps our ball side elbow player denies the return pass from the corner. our back side bottom player rotates to protect the rim. our nail player gets into the paint and splits the two skip pass options.

We also disguise our defense by using 1-2-2, 2-3 and 1-3-1 looks. We can also trap utilizing our bottom players and top players.

This year we are playing with switching in and out of the 1-1-3. our other defense is a "sort of" pack line man defense.

This defense has been very good to us.
