Scoring Out of 1-4 Sets

with Marquis Hines,
former Vincent (WI) High School Girls Head Coach,
3x WIAA Division-I State Champs (in four years);
Played for University of Wisconsin, Green Bay from 1985-89

Three-time State Championship coach Marquis Hines of Homestead High School (WI) takes you through his entire 1-4 Offensive System. This system has made his teams sone of the most dangerous offensive threats in the state of Wisconsin.

Using the 1-4 set as a foundation, Coach Hines has developed key plays with multiple variations that will produce increased scoring opportunities for any offense. Hines provides on-court demonstrations of five simple, yet effective entries into the 1-4 set that are perfect for any team at the high school and middle school levels.

Each of the 1-4 offensive play sets, as well as each of the three in-bounds plays, initially looks the same to a defense. This forces the defense into a false-sense of security, thinking they know where the play is designed to go, while allowing for the offense to play off of the defense's overconfidence.

He also provides insight on how to "play past the play," teaching various reads and fundamental concepts that will help your players develop court sense and to be a constant threat when the defense adjusts.

In addition to the 1-4 half court sets, Hines demonstrates:

  • Three 1-4 baseline out-of-bounds plays.
  • A 1-4 press break designed to get ahead of the pressure and create an advantage for your offense.
  • How to use a "big" post player in the 1-4 set.
  • Pick and roll options from the 1-4.
...all while continuously reinforcing basic skills and basketball fundamentals.

Special situations are covered to include where to best utilize players with certain skills. Variations from the 1-4 set are shown to utilize a player's specific characteristic to create offensive opportunities. Throughout the DVD, Coach Hines highlights key coaching points to reinforce basic skills such as setting picks, correctly sweeping below the knees, maintain a triple threat position and consistent floor spacing.

Learn the ways of Marquis Hines system that has yielded 3 state championships within a 4-year span and has allowed for several successful coaching stints at several programs.

Perimeter Player Development

with Marquis Hines,
former Vincent (WI) High School Girls Head Coach,
3x WIAA Division-I State Champs (in four years);
Played for University of Wisconsin, Green Bay from 1985-89

Today's perimeter players love the outside shot and the highlight drive to the rim, but neglect such areas as screen and roll defense, ball handling with both hands, footwork, and maximizing the dribble. Using his "Dick Bennett-inspired coaching techniques," Marquis Hines highlights the essence of the complete, all-around perimeter player with a series of drills focusing on the skill-sets required to become a polished offensive threat.

Coach Hines begins by demonstrating several drills to train the mid-range jump shot. He uses curls to create pull up jump shots and the sweep move to create space and get to the rim. From there he progresses to the fade-counter move for long- and mid-range shots. Hines shows techniques using chairs for closer pull up jump shots and how to get to the rim. Finally, he teaches shooting off a down screen by incorporating previous techniques within curls and fades, but focusing on the catch and shoot. Hines explains specific footwork that creates balance for guard play and improves shooting form.

Ball handling is heavily stressed as Hines puts players through a series of dribbling drills that utilize chairs as stationary defenders. Players are taught the correct form for the cross-over, between the legs, and around-the-back move sets and the importance of the first two dribbles to eliminate unnecessary dribbling, to create space, and gain an offensive advantage.

Coach Hines gets into 2-on-2 with the "Definitive Pick and Roll" drill. He discusses how to hedge, show, and be in help mode as a means to negating any advantage initially created by an on ball screen.

The segment ends with individual shooting drills that emphasize the art of stepping into the shot while maintaining balance when using an off-the-ball cut.

Bring guard play back to its heyday with drills that will develop a more complete perimeter offensive and defensive threat.

Conditioning for Up-Tempo Basketball

with Marquis Hines,
former Vincent (WI) High School Girls Head Coach,
3x WIAA Division-I State Champs (in four years);
Played for University of Wisconsin, Green Bay from 1985-89

Three-time WIAA Division-I State Champ Marquis Hines takes you through a series of offensive and defensive full court conditioning drills and provides an overview of his pressure defensive schemes. These schemes are designed to wear opponents down and break their will to compete.

Coach Hines demonstrates several key warm-up activities (including High Knees, Carioca, Jog) aimed at preparing the body for a hard days work. He demonstrates effective team-based conditioning and skill development drills such as the 3-man-weave, 5-man-weave, and speed lay-ups. Valuable drills for any high school or middle school program.

Hines offensive and defensive mindset is on display, as he demonstrates various options in a secondary break offense, a quick overview of his 1-2-2 full court trapping press and an overview of his half court 1-3-1 zone with trapping responsibilities.

He adds a second series of conditioning drills with a ball to develop fundamental skills while getting players in shape.

The development of individual skills and strong conditioning is the foundation for a successful basketball team. Coach Hines provides drills you can use to improve conditioning and fundamental skills in your players.
