Scott Sutton, son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton, has guided Oral Roberts University for 16 seasons. He has taken a struggling program and turned it into a consistent team that averages 19-20 wins per season. Join Coach Sutton and his team at their first practice of the year and see how a well-rounded practice is organized.

In this video, you'll get to see how Coach Sutton installs his offensive and defensive concepts with breakdown drills. Learn how to sharpen your players' skills with shooting, conditioning, and rebounding drills. Improve multiple phases of your transition offense with drills to develop your fast break, secondary break, and press offense.

This practice will show you how to start your year off right with practice drills for the following topics:

  • Shooting - Two drills will get your players repetitions to work on their shooting accuracy in practice. The competitive 5 Balls drill will motivate your players to focus on their form, while the Perimeter Pass & Shoot drill will teach your players how to make an extra pass to find the open shooter.
  • Rebounding - Two drills will show your players how to make collisions with the opponent and hold their position for the rebound. The 2-on-1 Rebounding drill will help you find the toughest players on your team.
  • Conditioning - Get your players in shape while also teaching other concepts. The Hourglass Drill forces your players to communicate while also improving their defensive slides. Pressure your players to make critical lay-ups in transition with the 84 & 2 drill. Both of these drills develop important skills while getting your players ready to run for the first game of the season.
  • Motion Offense Drills - Improve your down screen execution with a drill Oral Roberts uses to work on the entry set into their offense. Two variations of this drill work through the multiple cutting options off down screens at both the blocks and in the corners. Teach your players how to make sharp cuts as they make their movements as explosive and efficient as possible with the competitive Back Cut drill. In a position-specific drill, watch how perimeter players play off post feeds with cutting and screening.
  • Transition - Coach Sutton implements multiple phases of transition offense with three practice segments. In the 4-Man Break drill, your team will go through the scoring options for each player in your primary fast break. 5-on-0 Secondary is a great drill for teaching several transition offense concepts all at once as players run through options to get the ball inside and then flow into 3-on-2 and 2-on-1 fast break situations. Oral Roberts also runs through their press break offense, which will let you see how to use multiple cutters to keep the floor spaced and give you options to advance the ball up the floor.
  • Defense - Developing defenders is major emphasis in Coach Sutton's first practice. Six defensive drills will teach individuals how to defend the post, pressure the ball and deflect passes. The Dog Drill challenges the on-ball defense of your players as they compete 1-on-1 to prevent the ball from being advanced up the floor. The Mr. Iba Drill is an all-purpose drill that will let you know which players on your team are serious about playing defense. In the drill, your players will guard the ball, jump into help position, take a charge, and hit the floor for loose balls. Before you build in more advanced defensive concepts, use these drills to strengthen the defensive abilities of your players.

This inside look at Oral Roberts' first practice of the year will serve as a great blueprint for planning your early season practices. You'll get
